In June of 1978, Staton Correctional Facility opened. The institution was named in honor of Thomas F. Staton, a previous Chairman of the Board of Corrections. The institution is located off Highway 143, approximately 12 miles west of Wetumpka in Elmore County. It is presently a medium security adult male facility. It is surrounded by approximately 3260 feet of a 12-foot in height chain link fence, reinforced with razor wire installed on the top and bottom of the fence. Staton housing includes four identical dorms with a capacity of 204 inmates each. The dorms are divided into three pods each. The remaining two housing units are open bay dorms. Dorm A has the capacity for 200 inmates and Dorm B has the capacity of 360. The total inmate population capacity is 1376.
Staton presently provides emergency medical care and a medical observation unit for Draper, Elmore, and Frank Lee. Additionally, Staton in conjunction with J.F. Ingram Technical College offers educational and vocational courses such as Adult Basic Education, college classes, literacy programs, auto body and heavy equipment repair, upholstery, welding, horticulture, and barbering. Staton also has a law library, a regular library, staff psychologist for counseling, and substance abuse treatment programs.
