Mary-Coleman Mayberry Roberts is the General Counsel for the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC), where she manages an in-house staff of five attorneys, two paralegals, and three administrative assistants. She also provides legal counsel to the commissioner and other executive-level decision makers; serves as a liaison with external stakeholders, to include the Office of the Attorney General and the Office of the Governor; and oversees the department’s contracting and procurement processes.

In March 2019, Roberts was appointed to serve as then-Commissioner Jefferson Dunn’s Special Advisor on Suicide Trends and Prevention. In July 2019, she attended the ADOC’s two-week long Intermediate Leadership Academy, where she received special recognition as a Distinguished Graduate for her outstanding performance during the training course.

Prior to her tenure with the ADOC, she served as a judicial assistant and law clerk to then-Presiding Judge of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals Pamela Baschab. Following Judge Baschab’s retirement in 2008, she accepted a staff attorney position in Presiding Judge Mary B. Windom’s chambers, where she served for approximately six years drafting memorandums and opinions in response to direct appeals, special writs, Rule 32s, and death penalty cases. Roberts received a Juris Doctorate from the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law in 2007. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Auburn University.
