Open Security Positions

Correctional Security Guard (CSG) Correctional Officer Trainee (COT)

The CSG is an entry-level position. CSGs work many posts inside the facilities. Primary responsbilities include supervising inmates and dormitories, conducting searches, working dining halls, and promoting rehabilitation.

The COT is an entry-level position that prepares employees to become Correctional Officers. COTs are responsible for the same tasks as CSGs. However, firearms certification allows them to work additional posts, such as transferring inmates, manning towers and operating perimeter trucks.

Requirements:

  • 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • U.S. citizen
  • Clean drug screen and background check
  • No felony or domestic violence convictions
  • Honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces (general or uncharacterized discharges may be accepted.)

Requirements:

COT candidates must meet all the CSG requirements along with the following ones:

  • 19 years of age
  • College degree OR BAT/ACT Workkeys test results
  • Must pass the physical fitness assessment
  • Psychiatric evaluation

Training:

CSGs must complete the 6-week ADOC Training Academy to receive ADOC certification.

Training:

COTs must complete the 10-week APOSTC Academy to receive APOSTC certification.

ACTIVATE Career Readiness Program

What is ACTIVATE?

Enrollment is open for a new, no-cost college and career readiness program aimed at reducing barriers for those who need additional assistance to become Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) correctional officers. This six-week course will provide hands-on help with meeting the physical and educational standards for ADOC correctional officers. This also allows the participants to get paid as a COT while in training and receiving college credit. Upon completing the six-week course, participants will attend the 10-week APOSTC Academy where they will have the opportunity to earn certified law enforcement officer status.

Benefits:

  • Make More Money: program participants will be hired as COTs and receive COT pay and benefits. For current CSGs, this could increase your yearly salary by nearly $15,000!
  • Earn College Credit: upon completing the program, participants can earn up to nine college credits from an accredited institution for free in just six weeks. The current ACCS campuses offering the ACTIVATE curriculum are Jefferson State Community College, Shelton State Community College, and Reid State Technical College.
  • Receive More Benefits: program participants will receive state employee benefits including health insurance and retirement benefits. Upon completing the program, participants will receive APOSTC benefits which will open more growth opportunities as a law enforcement officer.

Individuals who meet the following requirements qualify to participate in the ACTIVATE Career Readiness Program.

Physical Fitness Assessment

Timed Events:

Modified Agility Test:

Event 1 – Sled Push: This event requires pushing a training sled loaded with 165 pounds a distance of 15 feet across a level concrete surface.

Event 2 – Hurdle Over/Under: Applicant is required to run a distance of 50 yards then step over a 27-inch hurdle, followed by moving under a 42-inch hurdle, then step over a 27-inch hurdle, followed by moving under a 42-inch hurdle for a total of two overs and two unders. Hurdles are spaced 4 feet apart.

Event 3 – Balance: Applicant is required to run a distance of 72 yards then mount a 6x6-inch beam and walk a distance of 15 feet. At the end of the beam, the applicant then must dismount.

Event 4 – Weight Drag: Applicant is required to run a distance of 25 yards then lift, pull, or drag a dead weight 165-pound object (dummy) for a distance of 15 feet.

Sprint & Hold Test:

This event requires completing a 300-meter sprint followed by holding a 165-pound dummy for 10 seconds.

60-Second Reps:

(As many reps as possible in 60 seconds.)

Step Up Test

This event requires stepping up with each foot onto a 12-inch platform then stepping down so both feet touch the ground before stepping back up.

Sit Up Test

On the "Get Ready" command, applicant assumes the starting position by laying flat on their back with knees bent at 45 degrees. Feet may be together or up to 12 inches apart, resting flat on the ground and may be stabilized by a partner holding the ankles with the hands only. The applicants' fingers must be interlocked behind the neck or head.

Push Up Test

On the "Get Ready" command, applicant will assume the front-leaning rest position (push-up) with the arms straight, elbows locked, hands about shoulder width apart, and palms placed flat on the floor. The feet may be together or up to 12 inches apart. The body should be essentially straight when viewed from the side, from the shoulders to the ankles.

Required Documentation

Copy of high school diploma, certified copy of high school transcript, or GED certificate
Certified state-issued birth certificate issued by the Vital Statistics Office. Scans or copies are not accepted.
Copy of valid driver's license. If your driver's license is issued by a state other than Alabama, we need a copy of your driving history from the issuing state's Public Safety Department.
Copy of Social Security card.
Copy of your full credit report from one of three nationwide consumer reporting companies:
College degree or transcripts, if applicable.
Copy of your BAT/ACT Workkeys if you do not have an Associate's or Bachelor's degree. There is a cost of $45. This can be completed after you know you have passed the Physical Fitness Assessment.
Marriage certificate or divorce decree if you changed your name as a result of marriage or divorce.
Law enforcement certificate if already certified as a correctional officer or law enforcement officer.
Court certified dispositions with case action summaries for any criminal arrests or convictions showing all fines have been paid.
