ADOC ANNOUNCES 67 FOR JULY CORRECTIONAL OFFICER TRAINEE CLASS
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) is announcing its largest class of Correctional Officer Trainees since 2019, the last time a class had more than 50 enrolled.
On July 10, 2023, 67 trainees reported to the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center on the campus of Wallace State Community College in Selma.

EXECUTION CARRIED OUT FOR ALABAMA DEATH ROW INMATE
ATMORE, Alabama – The execution of Alabama death row inmate James Barber was carried out by lethal injection on July 21, 2023, at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama. He was pronounced deceased by a physician at 1:56 a.m.
The witnesses for the victim requested anonymity. There were four witnesses for the condemned inmate: Glen Barber, brother; Elizabeth Bruenig, friend; John Gallo, attorney, and Mara Rose Easterbrook Klebaner, attorney.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) Law Enforcement Services Division is investigating an inmate death at Elmore Correctional Facility, which has resulted in criminal charges.
On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, inmate Rubyn James Murray was involved in an incident outside his dorm with correctional officers resulting in a physical altercation with one of the officers. Both the officer and inmate Murray sustained minor injuries.

KILBY CORRECTIONAL OFFICER ARRESTED ON CONTRABAND CHARGES
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) Law Enforcement Services Division (LESD), arrested former ADOC officer Charlie Townsend on Saturday, June 10, 2023.
LESD agents interviewed Officer Townsend and he confessed to bringing in contraband for an inmate. He then signed a voluntary resignation form terminating his employment with the ADOC.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Inmate Kastello Demarcus Vaughan (ADOC records show an alias of Kastellio) has signed the Inmate Authorization for Release of Health Records, which allows the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) to disclose additional details about his medical history that have contributed to his physical condition.
Vaughan was admitted to Jackson Hospital in Montgomery on August 5, 2022, for a bowel obstruction and underwent surgery.

The Alabama Department of Corrections Graduates Its Largest Graduation Class in Five Years
SELMA, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) graduated ninety correctional officers in a ceremony held Thursday at the Alabama Correctional Academy in Selma. MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) agents arrested a correctional officer at the Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore on Saturday for attempting to smuggle illegal contraband into the prison.
At approximately 10 p.m., 25-year-old Darryl Jerome Bradley, of Millbrook, was arrested and charged with promoting prison contraband and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Gov. Ivey awards grant for drug rehabilitation in state prisons
MONTGOMERY-- Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded $504,892 to help inmates at Alabama state prisons overcome drug addictions that may have led or contributed to their prison terms.
The Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program is six-month course that will be conducted at seven prisons with the intention of breaking the link between drug addiction and criminal activity.

State Inmate Fatally Stabbed
ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. - The Alabama Department of Corrections is investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred Sunday at the Elmore Correctional Facility in Elmore County.
James Lewis Kennedy, 39, was fatally stabbed during an altercation with another inmate inside the facility at approximately 9 a.m. Prison officials have identified 29-year-old Patrick Dean Smith as a suspect in the stabbing. The circumstances that led to the stabbing remain under investigation.

Three Suspects Arrested at State Correctional Facility
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala. – Three people were arrested on Monday at the Kilby Correctional Facility in Montgomery County for possession of a controlled substance and attempting to smuggle contraband into the prison.
Twenty-eight-year-old Christopher Martin Wilson of Fayetteville, and 21-year-old Shiane Bambinelli of Leeds, were arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy to commit a controlled substance.

Alabama Department of Corrections to Close Community Work Center
The Alabama Department of Corrections announced a plan to close a community work center nearby the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore that will enable the DOC to augment critical staffing shortages at the maximum security prison.
Corrections officials said the plan to close the Atmore Community Work Center which houses 240 inmates with a staff of 27 employees, will take effect by the end of this month.
