As of August 31, 2007 there were a total of 29,235 inmates assigned to ADOC. 27,035 are male, 2,200 are female.

The Alabama Dept. of Corrections operates 29 facilities within the state. Five are considered maximum security: Holman, Kilby, St. Clair, Donaldson and Tutwiler. Ten are considered medium security, four minimums, with a total of ten Work Release / Community Work Centers

Alabama inmates may receive correspondence through the U.S. mail. Inmates are allowed to correspond by letter with family members and friends unless the mail privilege is withdrawn as a result of approved disciplinary action. Mail between inmates, whether state, county, city, out-of-state or federal, may be allowed only with the permission of the facility wardens. All incoming mail must be addressed so as to specify the inmate’s name, inmate number, and location within the institution. Additional items included in correspondence may be cause for mail rejection. Items such as food, clothing, jewelry, and toiletries may not be mailed to offenders. Individuals may not mail packages to offenders. ADOC policy strictly prohibits inmates from E-mail and Internet accesses. Please refer to Administrative Regulation 448, Inmate Mail.

During Fiscal Year 2006, more than 1,836 offenders participated in 38 Community Corrections programs statewide.

On August 31, 2007, 48.8% of Alabama’s prison population was sentenced for personal crimes (crimes against persons). 28.2% were sentenced for property crimes and 23% for drugs and other crimes. During Fiscal Year 2006, the annual cost to house an ADOC inmate was $13,417.40 or $36.76 per day. According to the American Correctional Association this is one of the lowest cost-per-day rates in the country.

As of 8/22/2008, there are 200 males and 4 females on death row in Alabama.

Lethal injection is the primary method of execution in Alabama. In 2002, the passage of Senate bill 240 provides for execution of the death sentence by lethal injection unless the condemned person elects the method of electrocution as described by Code of Alabama 15-18-82.1

The last execution in Alabama was on August 23, 2007. Luther Jerome Williams, AIS# Z513 was put to death for the January 23, 1988 murder of John Robert Kirk.

No. With the exception of some on death row, inmates do not have televisions in their cells. However, televisions are available in dayrooms, where inmates may view one set. Seating is typically bench style with only basic networks, sports and educational channels permitted for view. Televisions are donated by faith-based groups or purchased through Institutional Contingency funds. ICF Funds are generated through the sale of items on the inmate canteen (in-prison stores where snack foods, toiletries and approved prison items are sold).

All Alabama prisons have a heating system, but only the prison hospital and mental health units have air conditioning.
